State Apostille & Authentication by State

Every U.S. state runs its own apostille office, usually inside the Secretary of State, and every one of them has its own fees, its own turnaround, and at least one rule that surprises people. We submit documents to all 50 states and DC, every week, from our offices in New York and Washington DC. Pick your state below for the specifics, or skip the reading and call (212) 245-9690.

How state apostilles work

The state that issued or notarized your document is the state that apostilles it. Where you live now is irrelevant. Vital records (birth, marriage, death) must be certified copies from the state’s vital records office. Notarized documents (powers of attorney, affidavits, business documents) often need an intermediate step first: county-level certification of the notary’s signature. School documents usually need a notarized registrar statement before the state will take them.

That intermediate step is where do-it-yourself attempts die. Each state page below tells you whether your state requires it.

What we do

You send us the document, by mail or in person at 165 Broadway in Manhattan. We confirm the chain, quote a flat price from the rates page, run the document through every required office, and courier it back with tracking. If your document is going to a country outside the Hague Convention, it needs embassy legalization instead, and we run that chain too.

FAQ

Which state apostilles my document?
The state that issued it (for vital records and court documents) or the state where it was notarized (for private documents). Never the state where you happen to live.

How long does a state apostille take?
Same day to several weeks depending on the state. New York can be same day through our walk-in service. Each state page lists its current typical time.

Can one order include documents from different states?
Yes. We split them to the right offices in parallel and return everything together when it’s all done.
